Why Heritage Matters

Heritage properties appear in the news from time to time, particularly, when an old building is to be demolished.  Why should people care about their heritage?  What benefits can heritage bring to a community both in terms of its tangible heritage (old buildings) and its intangible heritage (stories, traditional knowledge, local cultural practices)?  This presentation will explore some of the various ways that heritage preservation can make a community more livable, better positioned to attract development, and a more desirable place for tourists.  It will focus on a number of tools that communities can use to preserve and develop their heritage and will examine a number of case studies around Newfoundland and Labrador.
