Nora Duke, Executive Vice President, Fortis Inc.
Fortis: Past, Present and Future. Remarks on the growth and success of a Newfoundland business

Fortis has its beginnings in 1885 as the St. John’s Electric Light Company, a predecessor to Newfoundland Power.  The Company played an important role in developing the economic and social fabric of the Province as it connected communities to the electricity grid from St. John’s to Port aux Basques.  In 1987, those who had Newfoundland Power shares turned them in for Fortis shares and so began the formal story of Fortis.  At the time Newfoundland Power was 100% of Fortis; today it is 4%.  Join Ms. Duke as she shares the story of Fortis Inc.’s growth to a leading North American utility with $47 billion in assets, over 3 million customers and more than 8,000 employees.
